Because of America's economic deficit, Republican Representatives are proposing to cut Planned Parenting. Planned Parenthood is a for profit organization that offers teens or young adults free women's health check up, birth control, abortion, and std testing. Currently the United States is in debt $1.5 trillion. Republicans propose that cutting Planned Parenthood will help our debt. However, Planned Parenthood's total annual budget is $1billion. Another reason Planned Parenthood may possibly be cut is because of their abortion rate. Abortion is a very controversial issue today. According to the article, in 2009 more than 800 Planned Parenthoods formed more than 332,278 abortions.
In my opinion, I think it is wrong to cut Planned Parenthood. Government officials says their main reason of cutting is because of money, but I think its because they offer abortion and "advocate teenage sex."I feel that if Planned Parenthood were to be no longer, I think teen birth rates would rise again. Many of young girls and boys use this organization and I really think it is beneficial in today's health.
How do you feel about Planned Parenthood being cut? Do you think the government is trying to cut it for the right reason? What do you think will happen if Planned Parenthood were to be no longer?

I think it is a terrible idea to cut Planned Parenthood. It offers services to teens and low income men and women that would otherwise not be able to find/afford women's health services. I believe the benefits far out weigh the negatives of this organization. One in five American women has chosen Planned Parenthood for health care at least once in her life. Also,
ReplyDeletePlanned Parenthood provides sexual and reproductive health care, education, and information to more than five million women, men, and adolescents worldwide each year. Planned Parenthood is a program that benefits millions of Americans and cutting the program would put the reproductive health of millions of men, women, and teens and risk.

I completely agree with both of you. They can blame the fact that the United States is in debt on why they are cutting the funding but I am positive if Planned Parenthood was not associated with abortions, it wouldn't even be brought up as an issue. I have a few friends that have used their services (not for abortion) and they are an easy confidential place where girls and boys can feel comfortable asking questions. I think there would be terrible repercussions if Planned Parenthood wasn't around.

I agree with the other commentators. I think that Planned Parenthood is only being attacked because they offer abortion services. The author of the article actually says that the women could go to pro-life clinics for health services, which to me shows that the issue with Planned Parenthood is that the organization is pro-choice. I personally do not see anything wrong with abortions- I actually find them in many cases to be the best alternative in the situation. Overall, I believe that Planned Parenthood offers so many helpful services to young men and women who would otherwise not receive them. I think that Planned Parenthood is being persecuted due to it's pro-choice philosophy.

ReplyDeleteThis is an issue that really gets me fired up, and this article is no exception. The old, rich, white man trying to remove resources from women makes many claims in this article that I question.
ReplyDeleteIn his opening statement he says the cuts "will benefit American women and their children." He never explains anywhere in this article what the benefits will be or how they will be beneficial for the women and children. I personally don't see how removing affordable health care services for women will in any way be a benefit for them or their children.
Donovan himself admits that the $363 million that Planned Parenthood uses "is a tiny fraction of this year's $1.5 trillion deficit." Why, then, is cutting Planned Parenthood's funding, the action republican lawmakers view as best for reducing the deficit?
Not to turn this into a pro-choice rant, because Planned Parenthood does so much more than abortions... But on that same train of budget thoughts, what will it do to the governments budget if there are THREE HUNDRED AND THIRTY TWO THOUSAND children with parents who for whatever reason did not feel that parenting was the best option? Who is going to pay to care for those children when their parents aren't able? What kind of toll is that going to take on the government's budget?
I could go on for days about why I'm against the cutting of Planned Parenthood's funding.
